How To Prep Skin For Makeup: My Pre-Makeup Routine

Welcome back everyone!  Today we are going to be discussing and tackling a huge makeup issue that many girls face daily.  I have never struggled with acne, but as I got older I struggled with extremely dry and flaky skin along with peach fuzz and facial hair.  So even though I did not have acne, my makeup would look awful!  My foundation looked super flaky and dry with a lot of creases and you could see all my facial hair in every picture that I took.  So I developed this simple routine that has drastically changed my makeup game.  No ones skin will ever be perfect but with this routine you will notice a huge difference in your makeup and how it wears throughout the day.

Skin Care

The number one step to getting smooth, clear skin is keeping up with a good face cleanser daily.  The face wash that I use is Purity by philosophy.  This cleanser is gentle and soothing, perfect for anyone with sensitive skin.  I find a lot of face washes to be very drying but this product never makes my face feel like that.  I have been using this product for years now and I absolutely swear by it BUT, just because this product works for me does not mean it will work for you!  I actually found this product by going to Ulta and sitting with one of the sales associates and we just tested and talked about a lot of different face washes for my specific issues.  She was able to look at my skin and pick out different products that she thought would work for me.  I went home and tested them and that is how I found philosophy and figured out that it was the perfect fit for me.  I absolutely recommend going to Ulta and talking with a sales associate about the type of skin you have and testing different products to find the perfect fit for you.

Philosophy is more expensive than typical face washes but I believe that you only get one face and if you want to avoid wrinkles and aging spots than you should start investing in good products now to protect your skin.

This face wash currently retails for $23.00.

Along with my face wash I use a spin brush, specifically the Mia which I get at Ulta.  This brush gets deep into the pores for a better cleanse compared to just using your hands.  The bristles also remove the dead skin on your face, leaving your face feeling smooth.  The head of the spin brush needs to be replaced every 3-4 months for proper hygiene.

A Clarisonic Kit currently retails for around $200.00 give or take depending on the kit you decide to go with.  Replacement heads run around $20.00 again depending on which one you get.  This really is a great investment as they last for a long time.  I have had my Clarisonic for four years now and it is still working perfectly and the charge is still great on it.

Facial Hair Removal

Removing facial hair is something we all need to do but something no-one wants to talk about.  Well, I am here to break the mold because removing your facial hair is one of the key steps in getting that smooth makeup application we all desire.  I always avoided this because I thought it  would be very painful.  I mean we have all had our eyebrows waxed so I was expecting that feeling but all over my face.  Actually though, the process is pain free and 100% worth it.  When you start removing your facial hair you are going to notice the biggest difference in how your foundation glides on. I was seriously amazed at how smooth my skin felt and how much better my makeup looked.

This product is extremely easy to use and comes with simple directions in the package to follow.  It comes with a battery in the package so all you have to do is put the battery in, turn it on and start going in small circles all over your face.  Make sure to use good lighting so you can see if you are missing any hairs.  The directions also say that if it starts to get hot on your face thats normal and means it is working.  For me, I did not feel like the heat was to much or that it was burning my face.  I also do not ever get redness or skin irritation after using this product which is amazing considering how sensitive my skin is.

I find I only have to do this about once a week to every two weeks depending on how my skin looks.

This product retails for $19.88 and can be found in most chain retail stores and come in a variety of colors.  I got mine at Walmart in the hair removal isle with the wax strips and razors.  They also have a few cheaper versions that retail for around $10.00.

Here are some unedited pictures I took the other day right after using this product and doing my makeup 🙂

Face Mask

I love to save my face mask and moisturizer until after using the facial hair remover because it can be irritating to the skin.  I just recently picked up this face mask from Ulta and so far I am really impressed with it.  Face masks are a huge trend right now and for the longest time every face mask I tried whether it was name brand or a cheap one gave me the worst chemical rashes ever.  My face would look like I spent hours in the sun and burned so bad.  I spent a lot of time researching and a lot of time in the store and finally decided to try this one.  I have used this multiple times now and I have not had any type of reaction to it, which is amazing.

This mask feels so cooling and refreshing on my face, making it feel super hydrated and rejuvenated.  I would definitely recommend this product to anyone with dry skin.  This product currently retails for $34.00 and comes in two other types as well, the pure mask and the comfort mask.

Face Moisturizer

Last and final step is using a good face moisturizer.  I very recently switched from my philosophy moisturizer to this Grown Alchemist Hydra-Repair Day Cream.  I used the philosophy moisturizer for years so the fact that I switched is a testament to how much I love this cream.  I really loved the philosophy cream but I found that over time it made my face greasy and oily.  What caught my eye about this cream was that it claims to be a “non-greasy, nourishing face moisturizer that improves skin hydration levels”.  The description could not be more accurate for the product, I find that it does not make my face greasy or oily throughout the day.  You can really lather this product onto your face and you will not have any problems.  This product makes my face feel absolutely amazing and it smells like Froot Loops which, is never a bad thing.

I love this product as well because it will work for any skin type. Since the product applies so well and does not leave you feeling greasy you can use this on both oily and dry skin types.  You will notice a huge difference in your skin after using this product consistently for a few days.

This Hydra-Repair Day cream retails for $49.00.  I believe that this product is worth the money as the company is known for the use of organic skincare formulas and natural ingredients to create their products.  In a current generation of constant use of chemicals in products it is nice to find a skincare company using natural ingredients.  Like I said before skincare is so important to prevent aging and wrinkles, so using natural products helps to decrease the aging process leaving you with nicer skin.
